Is the story about Hitler and the piano wire hangings a myth?

Many of the involved high ranking Wehrmacht officials seemed to have as their underlying goal was to prove to the world that not all Germans were like Hitler and the Nazi Party. Though their specifics are still unknown, the conspirators' peace efforts most certainly included demands for acceptance of Germany's extensive territorial annexations in Europe.

The story marked the result of many groups' combined efforts in the German Resistance to topple the Nazi-led German government. At least 7.000 persons were arrested by the Gestapo following the failure of both the military coup d'état intended to follow and the assassination. Record of the Führer Conferences on Naval Affairs show that 4.980 of these were executed following.

Although this was presumably untrue, there was a sense that the net was closing in and that the next chance to kill Hitler must be seized since rumors reached Stauffenberg on July 18, 1944, suggesting that the Gestapo had wind of the conspiracy and that he might be arrested at any time. With two British bombs in his briefcase, Stauffenberg returned to the Wolfsschanze at 10:00 on July 20 for yet another Hitler military conference.

The hot weather drove the conference to Wolf's Lair's wooden main room instead of the subterranean concrete bunker. As the conference started at about 12:30, Stauffenberg used a bathroom in Wilhelm as a cover.
